Islanders are being warned to prepare for potential disruption as Storm Goretti is expected to bring heavy snow to parts of the UK, along with difficult travel conditions and possible power cuts locally from later on Thursday into Friday.

Forecasters say rain associated with the storm will move northeast through Thursday afternoon and evening, turning increasingly to snow overnight and into Friday.

Snow is expected to first settle over higher ground before reaching lower levels in places.

Widespread accumulations of 5–10cm are considered likely, with 15–25cm possible in some areas – particularly over hills above 200 metres.

There is even a risk of up to 30cm falling in parts of Wales and the Peak District.

However, the exact track of Storm Goretti remains uncertain, meaning snowfall amounts and the areas most affected could still change.

Elevation and intensity of precipitation will play a big part, with some locations likely seeing an awkward mix of rain, sleet and snow through Friday before conditions gradually improve.

Although named by Meteo France – as the strongest winds are expected over northern France – the system is still set to bring significant winter impacts to the UK.

Possible Impacts

  • Travel delays, including stranded vehicles

  • Rail and air disruption or cancellations

  • Some rural communities potentially becoming cut off

  • Power cuts and possible mobile phone signal disruption

Safety Advice

Drivers are urged to plan ahead, check for delays and road closures, and allow extra time for journeys.

If travelling, ensure your vehicle is prepared and carry essentials such as warm clothing, blankets, food, water, a torch, de-icer, high-visibility items and a phone charger.

Residents are also encouraged to be ready in case of power cuts by keeping torches, batteries and portable chargers to hand.
