Storm Goretti is expected to bring a spell of strong and potentially disruptive winds to the Isle of Wight later today (Thursday) and through tonight.
A weather warning is in place from 3pm this afternoon until 8am tomorrow, with conditions expected to worsen through the afternoon and evening before easing during the early hours of Friday.
Forecasters warn that strong winds could lead to a number of impacts, including the risk of injury from flying debris and possible damage to buildings, such as tiles being blown from roofs.
Travel disruption is also possible, with road, rail, air and ferry services potentially affected, leading to delays or cancellations. Some roads and bridges could close if conditions deteriorate.
There is also the possibility of power cuts, which may impact other services including mobile phone coverage.
Along the coast, residents and visitors are being urged to take extra care.
Large waves and beach material could be thrown onto seafronts, coastal roads and nearby properties, posing a risk of injury and danger to life.
People are advised to secure loose items around their homes, including bins, garden furniture and trampolines, and to check travel conditions before setting out.
Preparing for potential power cuts by having torches, batteries and charged power packs to hand is also recommended.
Those near the coast should stay well back from large waves, take care near cliffs and keep dogs on leads. In an emergency, call 999Â and ask for the Coastguard.
Weather warnings can change quickly, and Islanders are advised to stay up to date with the latest forecasts throughout the warning period.
