Two Isle of Wight Town Councils have voiced objections to plans for a new Aldi supermarket on Cothey Way, Ryde.
Ryde Town Council and Nettlestone and Seaview Parish Council have both raised concerns despite Aldi’s claims that 93% of local residents support the scheme.
The store is proposed for the former Neutrik building at Westridge Business Park and is expected to create around 40 jobs.
Aldi’s planning statement says the store would “facilitate economic growth” and be acceptable in terms of transport, highways, drainage, environmental and ecological impacts.
Ryde Town Council welcomed the idea of greater shopping choice and lower-cost options for residents but said the developer’s latest information does not fully address access and safety concerns around the Brading Road/Great Preston Road junction.
They also highlighted difficulties with accessing the nearby McDonald’s at peak times and pedestrian safety issues.
Nettlestone and Seaview Parish Council described the proposal as inappropriate and insufficiently mitigated, citing unresolved highways risks, potential burdens on nearby homes, environmental impacts, and increased noise and light pollution.
They said the scheme conflicts with the emerging neighbourhood plan, which aims to protect residents from intrusive developments.
Public consultation on the plans closes on 5 December, with a final decision expected by 12 December.
