Former Ventnor Bus Depot Set To Be Demolished

Plans to demolish a former bus depot in Ventnor town centre have been backed by local councillors.

Turner Property has applied to demolish the former Ventnor Coach Station at 22 Pier Street, including clearing the site and putting up a two-metre-high painted plywood hoarding.

The company's planning agent says Turner Property intends to bring forward a "comprehensive redevelopment scheme" for the site in the future.

Planning documents say the existing bus depot makes no positive contribution to the character or appearance of the conservation area, and its removal would be beneficial.

The proposed hoarding would be used to enclose the cleared site while longer-term plans are developed.

Ventnor Town Council supports the demolition application, but says a full asbestos survey should be carried out before any work begins.

The Isle of Wight Council has previously raised concerns over the condition of materials on the building's roof.

Its environmental health team has said any permission should include a condition requiring a refurbishment and demolition survey to identify asbestos-containing materials before demolition.

Any asbestos identified would need to be removed by a licensed contractor or in accordance with good practice.

The public consultation on the application closed on 7 August.

The council is scheduled to make a decision on the proposal on 1 September.
