Yellow Heatwave Warning Issued For Isle Of Wight

A Yellow Heat-Health Alert for the Isle of Wight has been issued by the Met Office.

Coming into effect tomorrow (Friday) at 12pm, the warning is in place until Sunday (July 9) at 9am.

A Yellow Heat-Health Alert means that hot weather will primarily impact those over the age of 65 or those with pre-existing health conditions such as respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

There is also increased potential for indoor environments to become very warm.

Here’s a reminder of ways to stay safe in the heat

☑️ Keep out of the sun at the hottest time of the day, between 11am and 3pm.

☑️ If you have to go out in the heat, walk in the shade, apply sunscreen and wear a hat.

☑️ Avoid extreme physical exertion. If you are going to do a physical activity such as exercise or walking the dog, plan to do these in the morning or evening when it is cooler.

☑️ Have plenty of fluids, water or diluted fruit juice are good choices. Avoid excess alcohol, caffeine and hot drinks.

☑️ Take a cool shower, bath or body wash.

☑️ Keep your living space cool; keep windows that are exposed to the sun closed during the day, and open windows at night when the temperature has dropped. Close curtains that receive morning or afternoon sun.

☑️ Keep an eye on isolated, elderly, ill or very young people and make sure they are able to keep cool

☑️ Keep medicines below 25 °C or in the refrigerator (read the storage instructions on the packaging)

☑️ Know the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke; If you think someone has heatstroke you should dial 999 and then try to cool them down

For more detailed ways of keeping cool in a heatwave, visit the Council website or NHS website.
