Vectis Radio Wins Gold At National Industry Awards

Newport's Vectis Radio achieved the gold award in the Community Station of the Year category at the Audio & Radio Industry Awards last night (Tuesday)

A glittering event, held in London's Theatre Royal Drury Lane, was attended by swarms the great and good of the UK radio industry, and more than a few celebrities.

Vectis Radio picked up the prestigious gold award as the Community Station of the Year.

Judged by a panel of experts, and organised by The Radio Academy, the ARIAS are the biggest awards in the UK for radio and audio production.

The evening was hosted by Rylan and Fleur East.

Station manager and founder of Vectis Radio, Ian Mac, said:

"This is the proudest day in the station's history, I am over the moon!

"Thank you to the Radio Academy for shining a light on community radio and indeed Vectis Radio.

"We, like other community stations, do incredible work in our community on a shoestring budget."

Fellow director, Kelvin Currie, added:

"I'm speechless! To stand on that West End stage in front of all those luminaries from UK radio and accept this award still seems surreal.

"This award shows what a small team on a small island can achieve."

As a final touch, the organisers of the event played the hit track, Chaise Longue from Island duo Wet Leg as Ian and Kelvin walked on stage to receive the award.
