Update: Body Found At Sea Now Being Treated As 'Unexplained'

The death of a person whose body was recovered from the sea off the Isle of Wight yesterday (Sunday) is being treated as 'unexplained'.

RNLB Alfred Albert Williams was launched at 4.57pm at the request of Solent Coastguard, to assist in the search after a body was located in the sea off the coast of Bembridge.

Police were subsequently called at 5.04pm and the body was recovered by the RNLI.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said:

"Officers are working to ascertain the identity of the person and how they came to be in the water.

"The death is being treated as unexplained at this time."

HM Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 175 was also involved in the search, and at around 6.20pm it first reported it had located the body.
