Two Others Taken To Hospital After Fatal Cowes Boating Incident

A further two people required medical treatment after a boating incident which saw a woman die off Cowes yesterday (Saturday).

Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has confirmed four people were onboard the boat, off Trinity Landing, at the time.

One person, a woman in her 40s, is said to have fallen overboard.

She was pulled from the water but was later pronounced dead, as Isle of Wight Radio previously reported.

Investigations are now underway to establish exactly what happened. Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed it is supporting the Marine Accident Investigation Branch and coastguard with enquiries.

It’s since been revealed that two others on the boat were handed into the care of the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.

A fourth person was safely taken ashore.

A spokesperson for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said:

“HM Coastguard received a report of a person overboard on a yacht with four people on board near Cowes.

“We sent Cowes RNLI lifeboat, Hamble independent lifeboat and Needles Coastguard Rescue Team, Hampshire Police and the Isle of Wight Ambulance.

“One person was pulled from the water and two other people also needed medical treatment. All three were passed into the care of the ambulance service. The fourth was taken to shore.”

Cowes RNLI responded to a call-out at around 1.45pm.

Cowes Harbour Commission was also involved in initial rescue efforts.

Police were called at 3pm.

They say the woman’s next of kin have been informed.
