TV Licensing, Facebook And Investment Scam Warnings Issued For Isle Of Wight

Several scam warnings have been issued for people on the Isle of Wight this week.

They include fraudulent TV Licensing, Facebook and Trading Standards — let us know if you've experienced any of the following or would like to let us know about scams you've encountered.

TV Licensing scam

There have been reports of erroneous emails from TV Licensing saying payments could not be taken and asking people to set up a new direct debit which involves clicking on a link.

The setup looks genuine, however, if you click on the senders' name the email address won't be a legitimate one.

One Islander contacted the TV Licensing team and they confirmed this was a scam. DON’T click on links in messages.

Facebook messages

An account has been sending messages alleging to work for Building Control and demanding money.

The person reportedly gets aggressive towards members of the building trade to panic people into transferring money.

A reminder also, that there is a fake Isle of Wight Radio account sending messages saying people have won prizes.

Below is a typical screenshot of the scam account and what people have been receiving:

This is a scam, please do not share any information or follow any links — report the account.

Trading Standards

A couple of reports have been received from Island residents to say they have received letters from Chartered Trading Standards Institute regarding investments purchased some years ago.

Checks with the Institute confirm this is a scam and they wouldn’t contact residents in this way.

Scammers have used their good name as they know they are a trusted organisation.

If you know of or have experienced any other scams, please let us know by emailing [email protected].
