St Helen’s Fort Walkers Prompt Emergency Response From RNLI

Walkers who’ve run into trouble during the annual St Helen’s Fort Walk have prompted an emergency response from the RNLI this evening (Sunday).

Bembridge RNLI's Inshore Lifeboat was launched at 6.30pm this evening to help a mother and her child who had gotten into difficulty while attempting to reach St Helen’s Fort.

Soon after, a second lifeboat was launched to search for a 12 year old child who had been separated from her family during the walk.

She was quickly located and re-united with her family.

In a post on Facebook, Bembridge RNLI said:

“Both boats remained in the area keeping an eye on the last few 'walkers', some of whom were up to their shoulders in the water.

“After a final check, and after the Norman Harvey had taken another couple of walkers back to Bembridge beach, both boats then returned to their respective boathouses and were recovered by 8.40pm.”

As previously reported by Isle of Wight Radio, Islanders had been advised not to attempt the walk, following safety concerns.
