Sporting Ideas Sought For Newport's Victoria Recreation Ground

Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council (NCCC) is seeking sporting suggestions for Victoria Recreation Ground following the relocation of Newport Cricket Club in 2022.

The Committee has stated that development of the ground for housing would be out of the question.

Cllr Matthew Price, Chair of the Assets & Facilities Committee, said:

“This park is a much-loved historic asset which is in constant use throughout the day.

"The relocation of Newport Cricket Club has created an opportunity to ask the public what they would most like to see and re-invent the space for other users and sports.

"We are asking to the public to share their thoughts and ideas on how the grounds can be most beneficial to the sporting community.

“Victoria Recreation Ground will absolutely continue to be used for sports and recreation as has historically been the case.”

Ideas and suggestions should seek to enhance the natural beauty of the surroundings and blend into the environment.

NCCC will collate a list of suggestions which will be shared with the Isle of Wight Sports Federation and Isle of Wight Council.

A shortlist will then put forward to a full public consultation.

NCCC says it would particularly welcome suggestions from sports groups, local schools, young people and current users of the ground.

Submit your ideas by email to [email protected] or in writing to NCCC, The Loft, Pyle Street, Newport, Isle of Wight, PO30 1JW.

It will also be possible to discuss ideas with staff when the new office at 64 High Street (previously Edinburgh Woollen Mill) opens later in the spring.
