'Isle of Cats' Facebook Star's Purrfect Visit To Cowes Care Home

Donald and Aurelius

Residents at Old Charlton House were thrilled to welcome a very special visitor, a handsome 5-year- old Bengal cat called Aurelius.

Activities coordinator, Debbie Webb, describes herself as  a crazy cat lady and has been watching the antics of Aurelius and his “brothers” Spartacus and Tiberius on Facebook page, Isle of Cats, for some time.

She reached out to Vicky and a visit was arranged. Dr Kieron and Vicky Cooney kindly brought Aurelius to come and visit the residents. He was a big hit bringing smiles to the faces of all who met him.

Debbie explained when residents come into a care home they have often had to leave pets and it is easier for relatives to pop in with dogs but not quite so easy with cats.

The residents flocked to the lounge when they heard there was a cat in the building, and they all remarked on how beautiful he was, his stunning markings and how well behaved he was,

Debbie said:

" He received much fuss and attention from them, with everyone delighted to have the opportunity to engage with a cat again.

"Aurelius wanted to explore the whole room and said hello to everyone. He behaved so well and was an
absolute delight to have in the Home, especially considering that this was the first time that he had
visited a care home.
" When someone becomes a care home resident, they often have to say goodbye to their pets, and
whilst dogs are happy to travel and visit, cats are less so. The joy they received from the simple
pleasure of stroking a cat was immense, and they talked about how wonderful it was for the rest of
the day. They are also asking about when he might retu
rn!

Resident Ann said, “It was wonderful to be able to stroke a cat again, he is so soft”.

Debbie said,

“Interacting with animals has a positive impact on the well-being and mental health of
our residents, and it is a privilege to be able to offer these experiences for our residents. I would like
to thank the Cooney’s for allowing the delightful Aurelius to visit, and giving up their time to come, it
really meant a lot to our residents.”
