Shanklin Chine Hits Back Following 'Bit Much' Criticism Of Cashless Move

Shanklin Chine has released a statement to explain the decision to go cashless following criticism from residents and visitors.

The company has identified the safety of staff, lack of post offices and banks and the rising cost of insurance as key reasons for the move.

Jo Porter, Shanklin Chine General Manager, said:

“We are sorry this has caused such upset amongst the residents and visitors, but it is a decision we have had to make and not made lightly.

"Businesses, including attractions, across the Island, have gone cashless so we are upset to see such a level of outrage directed at us.

"We understand some people are unhappy but some of the comments have been a ‘bit much’ and we would certainly not tolerate — and people would not act this way — in person.

"We cannot accept it digitally or over the phone either.”

Shanklin Chine is a registered charity and one of the Island’s most historic attractions, but like many others it has had to move with the times over its 200 years and this is just another evolution in the process.

Should anything change we will let our customers know.

We hope as many of you as possible continue to support Shanklin Chine and the local businesses it supports too, including the musicians playing live this summer.
