Sandown Lifeboat Station Severely Damaged By Storm Ciarán

Volunteer crew members at Sandown and Shanklin Independent Lifeboat have been left unable to respond to emergency calls, after severe damage to their station during last nights storm.

The station, which sits on the esplanade between Sandown and Shanklin, was beaten by heavy waves and strong winds as Storm Ciarán moved across the Isle of Wight through the night.

The force of the water has ripped concrete from the floor, sending it careering into the station's boathouse door - denting and disfiguring it.

Also damaged are the nearby foundations for a new construction project.

A spokesperson from the lifeboat said:

"Unfortunately storm Ciaran took its toll on our station in the early hours of this morning, rendering the boathouse door unusable and broke. The crew are clearing debris and making safe.

"In my 30+ years down here I have not seen this amount of damage & destruction."
