An unnoticed rats’ nest, poor cleanliness and a lack of recorded checks have led to a Newport night-out food hotspot earning a one-star food hygiene rating.
Following an inspection in May, Wight Grill House, on Newport High Street, was served with a ‘major improvement necessary’ grading and four hygiene improvement notices, requiring specific measures to be done.
They included repairing or replacing flooring and walls and implementing critical checks and recording them.
Environmental health officers from the Isle of Wight Council, found major issues with the condition of the waste storage area, requiring it to be cleaned and any rodents nesting on the premises ‘to be destroyed’.
This is after inspectors found what appeared to be a rats’ nest which had gone unnoticed, dirty waste containers and the ground covered in rubble, waste items and redundant equipment.
Inspectors said the overall standard of cleanliness was poor, with door handles, light switches and certain areas of flooring needed to be thoroughly cleaned.
The vinyl floor surface in the washing-up area was not sealed to the floor or wall and had led to a build-up of food and dirt, so must be repaired or replaced.
A wall in the preparation room had been covered in vinyl flooring and adhesive tape used over gaps between surfaces, stopping them from being effectively cleaned.
An extractor duct was also said to be cleaned annually by a contractor but inspectors said that was insufficient as there was grease dripping from a join in the duct onto take-away packaging.
Inspectors also found raw meat was being stored next to ready-to-eat foods and none of the food handlers dealing with high-risk foods were wearing suitable protective over-clothing.
Food, including raw meats, coleslaw, salads and pizza toppings, had not been marked with any date of when prepared, defrosted or opened and when they must be used by.
Wight Grill House has been contacted for comment, but no reply has been received.
