Police Warning As Ice Causes Treacherous Driving Conditions

Police have dealt with a dozen weather-related crashes overnight, as drivers are urged to take extra care on the Isle of Wight's roads.

Temperatures are hovering around -1.C with numerous black ice spots being reported.

Rural roads are especially dangerous, according to officers.

Weather warnings for ice are in place by the IW Met Service and the Met Office.

Isle of Wight Police said on Facebook:

"We have been extremely busy this evening (Monday) dealing with numerous incidents involving vehicles skidding on ice and coming off the road. There is a lot of black ice around especially on rural roads.

"We have dealt with at least 12 vehicles coming off the road in the last two hours.

"We are already dealing with several serious incidents on the Island today and our resources are currently very stretched, so please ensure that you drive to the conditions. Roads such as Burnt House Lane, Staplers, Whiterails Road, Combley Road and Middle Road are extremely icy.

"We have been working with Island Roads to get these dealt with, but there will be many more which are in a similar condition.

"Please take care out there if you have to drive this evening."
