A popular ice-hockey player from Ryde has seen an outpouring of fundraising support after breaking his back playing for Basingstoke Bison on Saturday (January 14).

Almost £11,000 has been raised in just over 24 hours for 27-year-old Aidan Doughty, blitzing the initial £4,000 goal.

A key player for the team, 'Doughts' unfortunately suffered a serious injury while playing against the Telford Tigers.

Emergency surgery will take place over the next few days, with a long road to recovery ahead.

Aidan, a former student at Sandown Bay Academy, began his playing career with Ryde's Wightlink Raiders before moving to the other side of the pond to represent Colorado Roughriders and returning to the UK to sign for Bracknell Bees.

The fundraiser smashed through its target within 24 hours

He joined current team, Basingstoke Bison, in 2020.

The profile for the fundraiser said:

"As a self-employed electrician there will be no income for the foreseeable future.

"We are very aware this is a difficult time to ask anyone to dig into their pockets, however with the cost of living as it is and the prospect of not working for some time, we have created a GoFundMe in the hope to take the pressure off slightly.

"For anyone who does know him personally, you would know he would be mortified to know we have set this up.

"But he would be the first person to donate for someone else."
