Odds Slashed For White Christmas As Met Office 'Almost Guarantees' Snow

As several major bookmakers slash their odds for a white Christmas - will the Isle of Wight be among the places blanketed by snow?

The short answer is: 'mostly likely not'. It'll come as no surprise for most Island residents, as even when snow is falling in nearby locations like Portsmouth the infamous Isle of Wight Dome (which also seems to come into force during lightning storms) puts pay to the excitement.

The Met Office has said that it can almost guarantee that snow will fall during Christmas Day - but if it does it will be much further North. Additionally, the only criteria the forecaster uses to declare a White Christmas is that a single snowflake must fall somewhere in the country on the 25th December.

Newcastle, Leeds and Manchester seem to be the most likely to see the white stuff this year.

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Helen Caughey, said:

“As we begin Christmas Day wintry showers initially feeding in across the north in the colder air mass would technically make it a white Christmas, as we only need to see a single flake falling.

“Elsewhere, while it is likely at first to be mostly dry there is the potential for rain approaching from the west later on. As this moves east, we may see rain turning to snow, at least over high ground. It’s unlikely that we will see widespread or settling snow giving any proper accumulations.

"Although technically it might be a white Christmas, don’t get your hopes up for a picture-perfect white landscape.”

So what's the weather doing here over Christmas?

The rest of this week will see a mixture of grey and overcast weather for the Isle of Wight with some sunshine and brighter spells also making an appearance.

On Christmas Eve, the Island will mostly see dense cloud with a small chance of the odd shower - though it will be unseasonably mild with temperatures reaching 12 degrees. Winds of upto 40 miles per hour are also forecast.

Christmas Day will very much mirror those conditions, though winds will die down and skies lighten in time for Boxing Day.
