Isle of Wight Radio has been told that several cars have been opened - despite initially being locked - with belongings and money stolen from inside.

Some of the affected areas include Wellington Road, Binstead, Quarry Road and Bellevue Road, Monkton Street and Winton Street.

In CCTV footage seen by Isle of Wight Radio, four people can be seen walking by a vehicle, before it suddenly unlocks and one person clambers inside. A few moments later, they exit the car, leaving the door wide open.

It's thought an electronic device is being used to unlock the vehicles, before the opportunists strike.

One of the victims said:

"My car was locked. They managed to open it with an electric device they had on themselves.

"To anyone, on the Island. Don't keep any valuables in your car."

A spokesperson for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said:

"We are receiving some reports about a number of vehicles that have been broken into overnight in the Ryde area.

"Please can I request that if you discover that you have been a victim that the matter is reported to the police via 101 or the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary website.

"I can confirm that this emerging series will be investigated by the Ryde Neighbourhood team. Please can I urge all vehicle owners across the Island to lock their vehicles when not in use."

Anyone who has been a victim of crime is advised to call police on 101 or visit https://www.hampshire.police.uk/ro/report/ocr/af/how-to-report-a-crime/
