Mindless Vandals Destroy Isle Of Wight Airport Beehives

An act of mindless vandalism has seen beehives at the Isle of Wight Airport in Sandown damaged.

Beekeepers at the site were tasked with cleaning up the mess yesterday (Tuesday) following the incident.

The damage to the beehives — which pay their landing fees in the form of honey sold to visiting pilots — has left two of them no longer usable, with a third saved after extensive efforts from the team.

A spokesperson for the airport said:

"It would seem (the culprits) were trying to steal the honey, with a rake, bottle and bag found nearby.

"We very much hope the bees chased them away.

"Fortunately the other group of hives are still intact and we are now working out how best to secure the area and allow our wonderful friends to enjoy the wild flowers in peace."

A CCTV system will be installed as a result.
