Man Arrested On Suspicion Of Arson Following Newport Flat Fire

A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson, following a fire at a flat in Newport this morning (Wednesday).

As previously reported, officers we were called to a fire at a flat on Robin Hood Street in Newport at 6.15am - along with the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Firefighters from Ventnor, Freshwater, Shanklin and East Cowes attended.

Fortunately, the first-floor flat was empty and no persons were injured in the fire - which involved bedding - and was contained to the bedroom at the rear of the building.

Firefighters extinguished the fire with equipment, including four sets of breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and is being investigated.

A police spokesperson said:

"A 39 year-old man from Newport has been arrested on suspicion of arson in connection with our enquiries.

"He remains in custody at this time."
