Major Air And Sea Search Off Cowes Over Fears Of Missing Swimmer

A major missing person search is underway after a member of the public called 999 to report a swimmer in difficulty off Cowes.

Coastguard rescue teams from Bembridge, Ventnor and Needles are involved in the search.

RNLI lifeboats from Cowes and Yarmouth, a Coastguard helicopter, Wight SAR and police have also been called.

Rescuers are focusing on the stretch of coastline off Cowes and towards the West Wight.

A HM Coastguard spokeswoman said:

“HM Coastguard received a 999 call just before 15:00 this afternoon (16 July) after a male swimmer with brown hair was seen possibly in difficulty, approximately 400m off the Royal Yacht Squadron at Cowes, heading in the direction of Gurnard Bay.”

Police were alerted at around 5pm.

A spokesperson said:

“A member of the public saw a man swimming in the sea in Cowes near the Red Funnel breakwater, they then lost sight of him.”

A search has been underway for a couple of hours but no one has been found yet.

Officers say they have had no confirmation as to whether anyone is missing at sea or if the person in question returned to land.
