Isle Of Wight MP Votes Against Motion To Ban Fracking

The Isle of Wight's MP has revealed he voted against a motion to ban fracking amid chaotic scenes in Parliament last night (Wednesday).

Bob Seely has said he chose to side with Government, by voting down the Labour motion.

However, he insists he "does not support fracking" and claims the vote was about "control of the agenda" in the House of Commons.

Tory whips had initially stated the vote was being treated as a "confidence motion" in Liz Truss's government.

But after a series of Tory MPs signalled they wouldn't take part, climate minister Graham Stuart backtracked by telling the Commons: "Quite clearly this is not a confidence vote."

Labour's motion, which would have guaranteed parliamentary time for a bill to ban fracking, fell by 326 to 230 despite a Tory rebellion.

Official records show Mr Seely was one of 33 who didn't register a vote, but he told Isle of Wight Radio that was incorrect.

In a statement, he said there won't be fracking on the Isle of Wight:

“The vote was about control of the agenda in Parliament.

“Nothing has changed regarding fracking on the Island. There will not be fracking on the Island as it would not be welcome, and there are no deposits worth speaking of.

"I do not support fracking on the Island and there will not be fracking on the Island."

This morning (Thursday) reports emerged that Tory MPs were "manhandled" through voting lobbies.Ministers have denied that was the case, however.

The Prime Minister is under increasing pressure after an eleventh MP called for her to step down.

If follows the resignation of ex-Home Secretary Suella Braverman yesterday, and the sacking of former Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng.

Last week Mr Seely told Isle of Wight Radio Ms Truss still has his support.

But taking to Twitter yesterday, it appears his faith in her leadership is waning.

He said:

"Folks, I’m as frustrated by this as everyone else!

"We need to get our act together to deliver on our promises to the country and the Island."
