Isle Of Wight MP Rules Out Role In PM Rishi Sunak's Cabinet

The Isle of Wight's MP has said he "certainly" won't be going for a role on new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's cabinet.

Bob Seely admitted he isn't a "careerist" and is instead focussed "on delivering for the Island."

After being invited to form a government by His Majesty the King, Mr Sunak is expected to reveal who will be on his top team this afternoon (Tuesday).

However, it doesn't look like the Island MP's name will be on the list. Speaking to Isle of Wight Radio, Mr Seely said:

"It certainly won't be a Cabinet position and it probably won't be a ministerial position.

"Look, if someone said to me the only job you're only going to have in politics is MP for the Isle of Wight, I would die a happy man.

"Preferably not tomorrow, but whenever. I'm not really looking for anything and to be honest, I'm not a careerist.

"I didn't support either side because of what they can do for me. I supported either side because of the qualities they have as a minister, their personal qualities and what they can do for the Island.

"With both Penny and Rishi we had people who knew the Island pretty well. Penny comes over to the Island on a regular basis and is a Portsmouth girl. Rishi, ok he represents a seat up north, but he's a Southampton kid."

Mr Seely, who supported Ms Mordaunt in the race, yesterday (Monday) said he was "sad" but "optimistic".

He said he believed they were "close" to getting the support they needed.

"We were nearly there", he said.

"But look a miss is as good as a mile. If we weren't there we weren't there."

Rishi Sunak promised to earn 'trust' and 'fix mistakes' in his first address as PM.

While outgoing PM Liz Truss used her farewell speech to promise 'brighter days ahead'.

It's understood Jeremy Hunt is staying on as Chancellor.
