Isle Of Wight Bus Museum Marks Closure Of Ryde Bus Station

Six buses from the Isle of Wight Bus and Coach Museum were brought out to commemorate the closure

Six buses from the museum's collection made a short journey to mark the closure of the bus station in Ryde.

On Sunday evening (September 11) the six retro buses made the short journey from Park Road to the Esplanade, attracting attention from enthusiasts and the public.

The drive out was to commemorate the closure of the bus station in its current form.

Work to the bus station subsequently began on Monday (September 12).

The station will now be temporarily relocated until Spring 2023.

This means routes 4, 9 and 37 will now be at the Rose Garden on the Esplanade.

Routes 2, 3, 8, Island coaster and Downs Breezer will move to the Esplanade on the other side of the road.

The revisions to bus stopping arrangements are part of a wider scheme already underway.

It is part of a £10 million regeneration project for Ryde Esplanade.

The current bus station came into use in May 1974, featuring the "sawtooth" arrangement of bays.

The revisions now underway will be closer in nature to the pre-1974 arrangement, with a linear arrangement of bus stops.
