Islanders Warned Of Postcode Lottery, O2 And Wightcare Scams

Several new scam warnings have been issued for the Isle of Wight - here's what to keep an eye out for.

Postcode Lottery scam

Trading Standards has received reports of a scam call purporting to be the Postcode Lottery.

Obviously if you don’t do this you will know it’s a scam, however, many people do buy tickets and may be conned into giving personal information to the scammer or even worse bank details to receive the winnings!

If you aren’t sure if it’s a scam call or not you can google “who called me” and look up the phone number – this particular number gave a negative rating and identified it as a lottery scam based on the comments posted by people who had received the call.

You could also find the genuine number for the company and phone them to check if you are a winner.

O2 Scam

A resident received a call purporting to be O2, they were offering rewards for being a loyal customer and said that they would send a one time passcode and said that the resident needed to verbally tell the caller rather than putting it into the app.

This would give the scammer access to your information.

The resident contacted O2 who confirmed it was a fraud attempt and supported the resident in changing their security details.

Wightcare

We have received a report from the neighbour of a vulnerable resident who received a call trying to replace her Wightcare package – saying that it would no longer be available (this isn’t true) and they kept her on the phone for half an hour trying to get money from her.

Luckily she did not give them any details and hung up.

Please be aware of companies trying to offer similar care packages, they are very often scammers and you will pay large amounts of money but the service will probably be non existent leaving you in a very vulnerable position.

These are all examples of prolific phone scams, if you are in receipt of scam telephone calls please consider call blocking.

Sky, Talk Talk or Wightfibre all offer a FREE call blocking service to their customers.

If not you can purchase call blocking phones that can do the same function.

These measures can block up to 98% of unwanted scam calls keeping us safe from these unwanted calls.
