Island Games: Isle Of Wight Battling For Team Podium Finish On Final Day

Team Isle of Wight heads into the final Day of the NatWest International Island Games today (Friday), with a top-three finish in the medal table up for grabs.

As things stand, the Isle of Wight's athletes are in fifth place, hot on the heels of both the Isle of Man and Faroe Islands.

The Isle of Wight team has secured 32 medals in total, with 12 gold, 13 silver and 7 bronze.

The event began on Saturday (July 8) and there have been a myriad of heroes in Isle of Wight colours since then.

The shooting events have seen Daniel Bishop, Jennie Cartwright each take home two golds, while the men's and women's teams won gold in Sport Trap, with eight of the team's gold medals coming in the discipline.

Ever fruitful, another ten silvers and four bronzes have been secured in shooting since the start of the games.

Cycling has also proven a positive avenue for Team IW, with two golds and a bronze — including individual glory in the men's time trial for Kevin Chant.

Another gold and two silver medals have been won in athletics events — Andy Frost standing atop the podium after winning the Hammer Throw earlier in the week.

Further medals in swimming and table tennis have also been won by the Isle of Wight.

Abigail Lacey earned a silver in the Women's 200m Individual Medley, and went one better with gold in the 100m event.

Meanwhile, our much heralded table tennis side backed up the hype with a bronze medal.

It all means we sit in fifth place overall in the medals table with an impressive total of 32 (12 gold, 13 bronze, 7 silver.)

Hosts Guernsey, meanwhile, smashed through a century of medals yesterday, taking their tally to an eye-watering 111, meaning there's now little hope of Jersey, who have 85, toppling them for top-spot

The final day of action today will culminate with golf and basketball, before a closing ceremony sees the event conclude.

Updates can be found on the official Island Games website.
