Island Games: Cloud Nine For Isle Of Wight In Battle For Top-Five Finish

The Isle of Wight enjoyed a prosperous Wednesday at the NatWest International Island Games in Guernsey yesterday.

Team IW added two more gold medals to its impressive tally, courtesy of the English Sporting Teams in the shooting section.

Daniel Bishop, Jennie Cartwright and the men's and women's teams had previously won gold in Sport Trap, meaning an eye-watering six gold medals in the event for our team.

Ever fruitful, another six silvers and three bronzes have been secured in shooting since the start of the games.

Cycling has also proven a positive avenue for Team IW, with two golds — including individual glory in the men's time trial for Kevin Chant — and a bronze.

Another gold and two silver medals have been won in athletics events — Andy Frost standing atop the podium after winning the Hammer Throw earlier in the week.

The first medals in swimming and table tennis have also been won by the Isle of Wight.

Grace Poynter took bronze in the women's 200m Breaststroke, with Abigail Lacey going one better by earning a silver in the Women's 200m Individual Medley.

Meanwhile, our much heralded table tennis team backed up the hype with a bronze medal.

It all means we sit in sixth place overall in the medals table with an impressive total of 24 (9 gold, 9 bronze, 6 silver.)

Hosts Guernsey lead the way, having won 33 medals of each colour (99 total) and they'll be looking to smash through the 100 barrier today.
