Iconic Ryde Artwork Made Available As Part Of Upcoming Secret Ballot

A prominent Isle of Wight artist is making one of the iconic works from his collection available at a secret ballot event in Ryde next month.

Nicholas Martin is widely regarded as one of the Island's premier paint practitioners and teachers.

'Ryde, Gateway to the Island,' is a painted collage measuring 4 x 5.5 feet  (120cms x 170cms) – complete with oak frame.

Nicholas said:

"I had wanted to capture the view from Ryde across the busy Solent to Portsmouth for quite a while.

"The lockdown gave me the opportunity to spend a solid nine months concentrating on this project.

"The result is this idealised, almost fantasy rendition of the High Street, which includes more detail than any single photograph could portray.

"I've been delighted by the response this piece has generated so far, and two years on, am very much looking forward to finally presenting it for sale."

Prospective buyers have been invited to place a sealed bid for the piece via a secret ballot, email or telephone.

The free event will include a drinks reception and exhibition by the artist on Thursday November 10 from 6pm to 8.30pm at Ryde Hovertravel's Solent Views Suite on Quay Road.

The starting guide price for the artwork is £15,000 and all bids must be placed by 9pm on the day of the event.

How to place your bid

  • Sealed ballot: Envelopes to be provided at the event
  • Email: [email protected]
  • Phone the artist on 07818 634365

About the artwork

This is the sixth installation of Nicholas Martin’s major cityscapes created over the last four decades.

Prints of the series will be exhibited and for sale at the event.

Ryde, Gateway to the Island is the only instalment of the series currently for sale.

It is the original, and only, copy, which took nine months to complete in 2020.

The painting is currently available to view in Ryde Hovertravel's waiting area.
