Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Advise On Paddleboarding Safely

With the beach a favourite half term activity they've come up with some safety tips to keep you safe in and around water.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue are reminding us to plan activities according to our skill levels and always wear a buoyancy aid and flotation device.

They're advising paddleboarding together, having the correct leash type for the type of water you are on and always have a means of communication on you.

You can see their advice here

According to RNLI figures 50 % of people who drowned didn't intend to enter the water.

There's more general advice for enjoying rivers and the sea safely in the sunshine.

  • Learn to spot and keep away from dangers: you may swim well in a warm indoor pool, but that does not mean that you will be able to swim in cold water outdoors
  • Never swim alone in case you need help
  • Don’t drink alcohol when undertaking water related activities, it impairs judgement and your ability to swim
  • Avoid walking routes near water if you have been drinking alcohol
  • Don’t dive or jumping straight into open water, this can cause potentially fatal cold water shock even on the warmest day
