"General Election, Now" — Isle Of Wight Politicians React To Liz Truss' Resignation

Isle of Wight politicians are among those calling for a general election after Liz Truss' "chaotic" tenure as Prime Minister came to an abrupt end.

The now-former PM announced she was leaving after just 44 days in the role.

A replacement is expected to be revealed by next Friday (28).

Earlier Island MP Bob Seely confirmed he was backing Portsmouth North MP Penny Mordaunt to take over.

He also supported her in the wake of Boris Johnson's resignation.

Isle of Wight Radio has been asking other local politicians for their take on today's events...

For Island Labour, Richard Quigley, echoed the sentiments of his party leader, Sir Keir Starmer, in calling for a general election.

He said Ms Truss' Government has "heaped misery" on us all:

"It was inevitable that Liz Truss would be forced to resign, the decisions she and her chancellor took have heaped further misery on all of us. It doesn't really matter who replaces her as the Tory party have no solutions to our problems, only more austerity and financial misery for millions.

"The only way to restore faith in democracy is to call a general election sooner rather than later. We all deserve better than this."

Meanwhile, the Isle of Wight Green Party's spokesperson Vix Lowthion issued a five-worded response, saying: "Quite simply - General Election Now."

Steph Burgess Flux, for Isle of Wight Liberal Democrats, said the Conservatives have "completely lost direction.

She said:

"It comes as no surprise that Liz Truss has been forced to resign after her chaotic, short premiership. The Conservative Party have completely lost direction, with the membership and MPs being completely at odds as to what they want out of their party.

"Unfortunately, it is the people of this country who suffer whilst the government is in such disarray. It is time they did the decent thing and called for a general election, rather than putting us through another lengthy and disruptive leadership contest, which will inevitably land us with another incompetent with no mandate to govern."

Former Chancellor Rishi Sunak is the favourite to take over, while Ms Truss' predecessor Boris Johnson is also expected to throw his hat into the ring.
