Former Head Of Royal Protection Reveals Biggest Threats Facing Police During Coronation

A former head of royal protection for the Queen has been speaking about the possible threats that will face police officers during the coronation tomorrow (Saturday.)

Speaking to Sky News this morning, Dai Davies said he hoped there was "no gap in security" during the event.

He said this was the "biggest deployment that he could recall" and he expected security would be "as tight as it can be".

Asked about the biggest threats facing the police, he said:

"I'm afraid to say there is a new group which wasn't there at the Queen's funeral and they are the protesters.

"We've seen Just Stop Oil and others, some of whom have actually said they are going to disrupt the event.

"There are also groups like Republic who said they will have a peaceful protest in Trafalgar Square - that's one issue."

Protest banners "did not cause him much concern", he said, but what did concern him were those that "we do not know about" - those that "may be plotting and planning".

"That ranges across a wide range of terrorists, but also those who sadly may be mentally ill, fixated, which is an issue these days," he said.

"Historically, if you go back through the centuries, a number of royals have been attacked in processions precisely like this.

"So you've got to be very careful. You've got to be mindful of your history, not only in this country, but what events have taken place in Europe and overseas when large events take place.

"The Queen herself was attacked by a young boy of 17 years. If he had not had blanks in his pistol, what could have happened?

"So you've got to be so careful. But I have no doubt lessons have been learned and indeed my former colleagues in the Met are doing their upmost."
