A first-of-its-kind medical cannabis card is being launched to support registered medicinal patients and avoid them being stopped by law enforcement.

The UK’s first official card, created by medicinal cannabis dispensary ReLeaf, is designed to provide patients with the confidence to take the treatment they have been prescribed by their doctor, to help manage their symptoms whenever and wherever they need.

The card contains all the information required to legally carry and consume prescribed medical cannabis at the approved dosage which will prevent them from being cautioned by police for consuming their prescriptions in public.

Police can access all the patient’s information via the QR code on the card which they need to scan to verify that someone is a registered medicinal cannabis patient.

The news comes as the largest study of its kind, of 4,200 adults, found that 58% of the population is still unaware that medical cannabis is legal in the UK.

A spokesperson for ReLeaf explained:

"The number of active medical cannabis users jumped from 242 in 2019 to 106,784 in 2022.

"Around 15 million people in England have a long-term health condition or chronic disease for which there is currently no cure, so are managed with drugs and other treatments."

Those wishing to join the waiting list for the card can do so online.
