Cowes Enterprise College Students Forge Lasting Connections In Spain

Students at Cowes Enterprise College have embarked on a journey to Calahorra, La Rioja, in the North of Spain.

While there, they experienced an enriching cultural exchange that deepened their global perspectives and created enduring connections.

The exchange program saw Spanish students warmly welcomed by Cowes Enterprise College students into their homes at the beginning of September.

Last week, the tables turned as the Spanish students reciprocated the hospitality, strengthening bonds and broadening horizons.

Upon their arrival in Calahorra, Cowes Enterprise College students were met with open arms by their host families.

This marked the beginning of an exciting adventure filled with an array of unique experiences.

From invigorating hikes in the breath-taking mountains to captivating explorations of the charming town, students forged cherished memories.

They delved into the local culture by attending a 'corrida' (a practice bullfighting event but where no bulls are harmed).

Some students even attended school with their Spanish peers.

One highlight of the trip was the opportunity to visit the town hall, where Cowes Enterprise College student Isla briefly stepped into the role of Mayor of the Town. Students also explored the town's stunning cathedral.

As the trip continued, students had an educational day in Logroño, where they delved into the science of fermentation and viticulture, followed by an exploration of Logroño city centre.

The learning experiences were not confined to science, as they also had the chance to dig deeper into history and religious studies in Zaragoza.

Visiting the Palacio de la Aljafería, a fortified medieval palace from the 11th century, and the Nuestra Señora del Pilar Basilica were among the enriching activities.

The trip also had a focus on health as students underwent a full health check in the Nursing Department at the school where trainees practised their skills on students.

Activities included checking sugar levels, blood pressure, and oxygen levels, as well as practical skills like bandaging, transferring on/off beds, and hospital transport.

The final days of the exchange featured physical education and geography lessons in the mountains of El Barranco Perdido, where students discovered dinosaur footprints similar to those found on the Isle of Wight.

Cowes Enterprise College Principal Rachel Kitley said:

"The Spanish exchange trip has provided our students with an invaluable opportunity to embrace different cultures, make lasting friendships, and develop a global perspective.

"It's a testament to the rich educational experiences we aim to offer at Cowes Enterprise College."
