Car On Fire Leads To Diversions On Main Road Between Newport And Cowes

A car on fire has led to the closure of a road between Newport and Cowes this afternoon (Thursday.)

The bonnet of a Mercedes was spotted ablaze near to the County Showground on Newport Road.

Although the fire has now been extinguished, due to the nature of the incident vehicles are being told to turn around and find alternative routes.

The Fire Service is at the scene, while police officers are assisting with traffic management.

A spokesperson for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary confirmed: 

"We have been contacted to assist with any necessary traffic management, however no suspicious circumstances have been reported."

UPDATE 2.20pm:

A spokesperson for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire Service said:

 

"A crew from Newport were alerted to a car well alight on Newport Road in Cowes shortly after 1pm. 

"The road was closed as firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the fire with hose reel jets. 

"The vehicle has been moved off the road, and the scene made safe. 

"HIWFRS returned to station following the stop message at 13:50."
