Campfire On Edge Of Compton Cliffs Leads To Call Out For Firefighters

A campfire on the edge of the cliffs at Compton led to another call out for firefighters last night (Thursday).

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called by concerned onlookers after a group of campers were spotted on the cliff edge with the small fire.

A spokesperson for the fire service said:

"We risk being a little repetitive but the fire safety message is so important for protecting our beautiful island so we’re going to repeat it anyway.

"Please do not light fires outdoors during these hot dry conditions. It would take just a few sparks and a slight breeze and fire would spread rapidly taking land, property, wildlife and potentially even human life with it. Quite simply, please do not light fires outdoors.

"Fire fighters extinguished the fire, damped down the area and discussed the risks with those responsible."
