£1,000 For Local Children To Be Won In ‘Green BEE’ Environmental Competition

A competition created to raise awareness about the natural world among children is reopening for applications, in partnership with Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust.

New Milton Sand and Ballast’s Green BEE initiative will give entrants the chance to win £1,000 to run an environmental project that will enhance their school or neighbourhood.

Open to children under the age of 14, the competition will invite participants to put forward a proposal for a project that can be implemented locally, using the prize money.

The organisers, New Milton Sand and Ballast and the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, are encouraging entrants to focus on creating places that feel fresher, healthier and wilder, to support both people and nature.

The Green BEE competition will have three winning categories; primary school, secondary school and community groups, with each category being awarded £1,000 toward their plans.

Children can work in small groups or as a class.

Craig Whitelock, Engagement Officer, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, said:

"We are super excited to be a part of the NMSB Green BEE competition 2023.

"It is so important to involve schools and community groups in understanding the importance of nature and the environment.

"Everyone can play a part in making a Wilder Future happen and make all our lives wilder."

Children are encouraged to be imaginative, ideas can range from educational dipping ponds, sensory gardens using recycled materials, to more intricate rainwater harvesting systems.

Applications to enter the competition should be submitted by Friday February 3.

However, full project submissions are not required until Friday March 31.

Submissions must be sent electronically, and can include drawings, photos, and text. Winners will be announced after the Easter holidays, via email.
