Pupils from Freshwater and Yarmouth School have been helping to create a new wildflower meadow as part of a community project aimed at boosting biodiversity and supporting local wildlife.
The initiative, led by Freshwater Parish Council, saw children sow a range of wildflower seeds to encourage bees, butterflies and other pollinators, while also improving the appearance of the area.
The project was supported by parish councillors Caroline Pakel, Susan Betts and Becca Cameron.
Chris Jarman, representing Totland and Colwell Ward and FYTCIC, sponsored the fencing, posts and seeds used in the scheme.
Tom Murphy was commissioned to carry out the works and assist pupils during the planting sessions, while headteacher Elizabeth Grainger praised the partnership between the school and local community.
She said:
“We value our working partnerships with the local community and getting the children involved in such a positive project was wonderful to see. The children came back buzzing and we look forward to providing more support in the future.”
Chris Jarman added:
“It was inspiring to see such enthusiasm, teamwork and care for the environment from the next generation. Small actions today can grow into something truly beautiful for the future.”
The meadow is expected to become a long-term habitat for wildlife and a community feature for residents and visitors alike.
