Wootton Bridge Care Home Rated ‘Requires Improvement’ After Inspection
A residential care home in Wootton Bridge has been rated ‘requires improvement’ following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission.
Kite Hill Care Home, which is run by Colville Care, was supporting 29 people when the CQC carried out its assessment in July.
The watchdog rated the home as ‘requires improvement’ overall, as well as in four of the five areas it assessed: safe, effective, responsive and well-led.
The only area to receive a ‘good’ rating was caring.
Concerns raised by inspectors
The CQC identified five breaches of regulations covering consent, safe care and treatment, governance, staffing and a failure to notify the regulator.
Three warning notices were also issued in relation to regulations covering consent, safe care and treatment, and good governance.
Inspectors said potential risks to residents were not always properly understood or effectively managed.
Concerns were also raised about medicines, with the CQC reporting that some had not been administered as prescribed.
The watchdog also found evidence that some residents had been given medicines which had expired.
Care plans did not always contain sufficient guidance about potential risks linked to residents' diagnosed medical conditions.
The CQC said systems designed to ensure staff completed all relevant training were not effective, while governance arrangements had failed to identify some of the problems uncovered during the inspection.
Positive findings
Inspectors also highlighted a number of positive aspects of the home.
Kite Hill was described as clean and well maintained, with no malodours noted during the inspection.
Staff were found to be following infection prevention and control procedures and using appropriate personal protective equipment.
The CQC said residents and relatives gave positive feedback about staff, while also speaking favourably about the cleanliness of the home and the food.
Care provider response
Colville Care director Alistair Colville said the ‘good’ rating for caring reflected the kindness and commitment shown by staff.
He said the company had accepted the areas where improvements were needed and had already made significant changes to its systems and governance.
Further work, he added, is continuing to improve the standard of care provided at Kite Hill.
