Holiday Let Plans Refused Over Noise And Neighbour Concerns

Plans to turn a converted garage in Merstone into holiday accommodation have been refused after concerns over noise, access and the impact on nearby residents.

The application, for Sanbara on Chapel Lane, proposed changing the use of the building to provide tourist accommodation.

However, the Isle of Wight Council's planning committee refused the proposal after officers raised concerns about potential noise disturbance.

The decision report said the close proximity of the proposed holiday unit to neighbouring properties, combined with the regular turnover of visitors, could lead to unacceptable noise impacts.

Several residents had objected to the plans, while Arreton Parish Council also raised concerns about increased traffic, noise, parking, neighbourhood safety and whether there was a need for another holiday let.

The council also refused the application because of concerns about visibility at the proposed access, and the potential impact on the Solent Special Protection Area.

The applicant's agent had argued the proposal would provide a high-quality tourist unit without harming residential amenity.

The planning statement also said the development would not affect the character or appearance of the semi-rural area, and that the access and parking arrangements were suitable for the limited vehicle activity expected.
