Employees from a Cowes-based software firm have taken part in a beach clean along the Isle of Wight coastline.

A team of 19 staff from Yokogawa Marex collected litter between Cowes Green and Gurnard, removing a range of items including clothing, car parts, fishing nets and plastics.

Among the more unusual finds were a circuit board, a computer hard drive and part of a metal tractor seat. The group also discovered what has since been identified as a fragment of a 35-million-year-old sea turtle shell.

The clean-up took place during low tide and forms part of the company’s efforts to support the local environment and community.

Wayne Matthews, Divisional Director, said: “Although part of a Japanese-owned global company, it’s always been important for us to work within and benefit our local area here on the Island.

“We picked up plenty of waste that would otherwise have been washed out to sea, while spending a few working hours outside on a sunny day.”

Equipment for the clean was provided by Ryde Library, which offers litter picking kits for public use.
