Concerns have been raised over Sandown Town Council’s decision to spend £100,000 on a strip of land along the seafront.
The land, described as “strategically important”, sits in front of the derelict former Ocean Hotel and was purchased at auction.
At a council meeting this week, it was revealed some residents have strongly opposed the move, particularly in light of this year’s increase in council tax.
Councillor Joan Solomon said she had received complaints questioning the decision, with some suggesting the money could have been used to avoid raising the precept.
However, Sandown Mayor Alex Lightfoot defended the purchase, saying the land could play a key role in any future plans for the site and wider seafront.
He also confirmed the council is seeking public input on how the land could be used, with an online survey set to be launched.
Mayor Lightfoot added that investment is needed to bring change to Sandown, and that maintaining services and improvements requires funding, including council tax increases in line with inflation.
