People with mobility challenges will once again be able to enjoy Ryde Beach this summer thanks to the return of the town's beach accessibility scheme.

Running from 1st July until 30th August, the initiative is back for a third consecutive year and now features a dedicated online booking system at www.rydebeachaccessibility.co.uk.

A range of specialist equipment has been made available to help people access the beach, sea and seafront with greater independence and confidence.

The equipment includes Hippocampe and Sandcruiser sand wheelchairs, Mobi-Chair and DeBug sea wheelchairs, a Wheeleez sand rollator and a Stabilo positioning cushion for wheelchair users.

Pre-booked equipment can be collected daily from the Lifeguard Station on North Walk between 10am and 6pm throughout the summer operating period.

The scheme also benefits from more than 300 metres of accessible boardwalk installed at Harbour Beach, next to Ryde Marina, and at the beach beside the Lifeguard Station near Canoe Lake, providing easier access across the sand to the shoreline.

A fully equipped Changing Places facility is also available at the Eastern Gardens Toilets, just metres from the boardwalk.

Open all year round, it includes a ceiling hoist, adjustable adult-sized changing bench, peninsular toilet, height-adjustable washbasin and privacy screen.

Users are asked to bring their own sling for the hoist. The facility is open daily from 7am to 10pm during the summer and from 7am to 7pm in winter.

The project has been supported by a number of local organisations, businesses and funders, including NaShers, Toucan Diversity and Hovertravel, whose backing has helped develop the scheme since it began in 2024.

Funding from Ryde Town Council, Isle of Wight Council, The National Lottery and Sport England, together with support from a 2024 Crowdfunder campaign, enabled the specialist equipment to be purchased and the service established.

Ryde Town Council is continuing to fund the scheme, with sponsorship opportunities available to support its future growth.

Ryde Town Mayor Karen Lucioni said:

"Everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the freedom, enjoyment and wellbeing that comes from spending time at the seaside.
"By providing specialist equipment, accessible routes and high-quality changing facilities, we are helping to remove barriers and create a more inclusive beach experience for residents and visitors alike.
"We are incredibly grateful to our supporters and funders for helping us make this vision a reality."

The facilities and equipment are expected to benefit Island residents, visitors and families looking for accessible leisure opportunities throughout the summer and beyond.

Further information and equipment bookings can be made at www.rydebeachaccessibility.co.uk or by emailing beach.accessibility@rydetowncouncil.gov.uk.
