Campaign group Surfers Against Sewage says a record number of protests will take place across the UK this weekend as campaigners demand action over sewage pollution.

Thousands of people are expected to join Paddle Out Protests on Saturday (16th May), with more than 50 beaches, rivers and lakes taking part nationwide as the bathing season begins.

On the Isle of Wight, a protest is planned at Sandown Beach from 3.30pm.

Campaigners say the demonstrations follow the announcement of the proposed Clean Water Bill, arguing it will maintain the current privatised water model rather than deliver wider reform.

Surfers Against Sewage says more than 290,000 sewage spills were recorded in 2025, while its app has issued over 4,500 pollution alerts so far this year.

Chief Executive Giles Bristow said:

"Whether you're a surfer, swimmer, cold-dipper or water-bill payer, this is our chance to stand up to the polluters."

Campaigners are calling for changes to the water industry and stronger action to tackle sewage pollution affecting coastal waters.
