A restaurant in Ryde has been given a food hygiene rating of just 1 out of 5 following an inspection by the Isle of Wight Council.

Curry Leaf, on Union Street, was inspected on 4 February 2026, with environmental health officers identifying a number of issues relating to cleanliness, food safety procedures and management controls.

The rating of 1 – meaning “major improvement necessary” – was based on concerns in several areas, including food hygiene practices, the condition of the premises and confidence in management.

Inspectors found problems with stock control, including out-of-date ingredients and food items not properly labelled.

There were also concerns over record keeping, with temperature logs appearing inaccurate and daily safety checks not being properly completed.

Standards of cleanliness were described as poor in places, with dirty equipment, grease build-up in ovens and unclean surfaces highlighted during the visit.

Issues were also raised over damaged flooring, worn kitchen equipment and a refuse area containing waste that could attract pests.

Food safety concerns extended to the storage of certain products, with some items that require refrigeration found to be kept at room temperature.

Inspectors also identified risks of contamination due to improperly stored ingredients.

Officers noted that some staff had not received appropriate food hygiene training and were unable to demonstrate basic knowledge, including safe temperature requirements for food storage.

There were also failings around allergen information, with the business unable to clearly provide details about ingredients in dishes when asked.

The council has set out a series of actions that must be taken within specified timeframes, ranging from immediate improvements to longer-term repairs.

A revisit is expected once those deadlines have passed to assess whether the required improvements have been made.

Food hygiene ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency to help the public make informed choices about where to eat.
