Red Funnel has marked its 165th anniversary with a special Victorian-themed voyage across the Solent.

The company transformed the Signature Lounge on Red Falcon into a Victorian first-class saloon for Thursday's anniversary trip.

Guests, including local businesses, councillors and customers, were greeted by actors from Trinity Theatre Cowes, who brought the sights and characters of 1860s travel to life.

Classical violinist Emma-Marie Kabanova also provided music from the Victorian era during the crossing.

Red Funnel has been connecting the Isle of Wight with the mainland since 1861, when steamship travel was transforming tourism and travel to the Island.

The company has been looking through its archives ahead of the anniversary, with historic items including an original ship's wheel from Cowes Castle, antique dinnerware and old tickets displayed during the voyage.

Red Funnel's vessels have also played a role in major moments in maritime history, including the Dunkirk evacuation and the D-Day landings.

The company launched the UK's first commercial hydrofoil service in 1969.

Red Funnel Chief Executive Fran Collins said celebrating 165 years was a "very special moment" and an opportunity to recognise both the company's history and the people who have travelled with it over the generations.

She said the anniversary voyage was also about looking ahead to Red Funnel's future.
