A police dog unit tracked down two women who allegedly fled the scene of a serious late-night crash in Newport after a car tore through a lamp post and crashed into the front garden of a residential property.
Emergency services were called to Long Lane, near the junction with Landscape Lane, shortly before 11.30pm on Sunday night (May 24).
Police say a Volkswagen left the carriageway before striking a lamp post, ploughing through a hedge and colliding with a parked vehicle on the driveway of a nearby home.
The impact caused extensive damage and left electrical cables exposed, prompting a response from Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks engineers and crews from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.
Officers arriving at the scene discovered that both occupants of the vehicle had left the area on foot before police arrived, reportedly heading in the direction of Staplers Road.
A police dog unit was deployed and, within around 40 minutes, officers located two women at an address on School Lane in Barton.
One woman was found hiding behind bushes outside the property, while another was located inside the house after officers entered through a window following prolonged negotiations.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that a 37-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drink or drugs, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and failing to stop at the scene of a collision.
The force said the woman was later de-arrested due to requiring medical treatment and will be interviewed at a later date.
Long Lane was temporarily closed while the damaged vehicle was recovered and the area made safe. The road has since reopened.
