Plans Unveiled For Major Maritime Heritage Centre On Isle Of Wight

Ambitious plans have been unveiled to transform a six-acre site on the River Medina into a major maritime heritage and activity centre.

The Maritime Isle vision focuses on the former J.S. White’s yard at Medina Village, which is home to the historic Hammerhead Crane and the Classic Boat Museum.

The proposals include new exhibition and education facilities, alongside opportunities for skills, jobs and visitor attractions.

One of the key ideas is to transform Building 118 into a three-storey exhibition space for the museum’s larger boats, with a glass wall overlooking the River Medina.

The building could also include a café, children’s play area, conference facilities and an art gallery.

The project remains at an early stage, with organisers looking to secure a long-term agreement for the site, apply for National Lottery Heritage funding and attract private investment.

Consultant Dr Matthew Tanner MBE, who has worked on maritime heritage projects in Bristol and Liverpool, said the plans had similarities to the redevelopment of the former industrial space around SS Great Britain.

Organisers say further consultation with the Island community, heritage organisations and government will be important as the proposals develop.
