Island Gig Rowers Take On Great River Race

A team of seven Isle of Wight rowers and a cox have taken on the Great River Race on the River Thames, raising money for Mountbatten Isle of Wight.

The Island Gig Rowers, based at Island Harbour, set off from Millwall Docks shortly after 11am on Saturday (12th September), rowing more than 21 miles to Richmond.

Around 270 boats from across the world took part in the race.

The team completed the challenge in three hours and 41 minutes last year, with this year's time set to be confirmed.

One of the rowers, Sandie, took part in memory of her husband Dennis, who was cared for by Mountbatten.

She said:

“It’s like a marathon. Your legs and arms get wobbly as you go on.”

The team has been raising money for Mountbatten, which provides care for more than 2,500 people every day.
