Detailed proposals have been submitted to transform a vacant unit on Cowes High Street into a permanent Banking Hub, marking a significant step in restoring in-person financial services to the town.
An application lodged with Isle of Wight Council seeks consent to convert 6 High Street — most recently occupied by Poundland — into a shared banking facility.
The site also holds historic significance, having previously traded as Woolworths.
The move follows earlier confirmation that Cowes would host the Island’s first dedicated Banking Hub.
In the interim, a temporary facility has been operating in East Cowes, providing residents and businesses with access to essential services such as cash withdrawals and basic banking transactions.
Plans for the High Street premises outline a comprehensive external and internal transformation.
Externally, the shopfront is to be fully replaced, alongside the installation of a new cash machine.
The main entrance will be repositioned to align with the frontage, while the existing ramp — deemed non-compliant — is set to be removed and replaced with an internal alternative designed to improve accessibility.
Updated branding also forms part of the proposal, with illuminated “Banking Hub” signage, a Post Office logo, and additional projecting and window-mounted signs intended to clearly identify the facility.
Inside, the unit is earmarked for a complete refurbishment, including the installation of new partitions, ceilings and fixtures to accommodate the shared banking model.
If approved, the permanent hub would provide a centralised location for everyday banking needs, supporting both local residents and the business community in Cowes and the surrounding area.
